Last year’s seniors take a selfie in the cafeteria at Prom-ish last year. Due to COVID-19, prom was hosted in the courtyard and cafeteria, but the STUCO committee hoped to change that with this year’s plans. “I am really excited for this year’s prom because we are doing it at a different venue than normal, and hope that the things we have planned will make it a night you will never forget,” Student Council co-head Ariana Balakrishnan said.

Senior Evy Grenger focuses as she manages to get the “Word of the Day.” Grenger has been playing “Wordle” since January, and said it has improved her critical thinking skills and loves to challenge herself with the new “Word of the Day.” “I feel like it has increased my critical thinking skills because to figure out the word, you really have to think about where the letters go and which are correct, Grenger said. It makes me think about the words I know and how they could possibly fit into the puzzle.”

It’s Just a Word

Ruchi Sankolli, Assistant Editor March 4, 2022

One word, five letters. Guess it right, and victory is yours. But here’s the catch: six guesses, once a day. That’s all a typical player of the online game “Wordle” gets. The game, which can...

Senior Madelyn Roberts smiles in the snow as she holds her Colorado State memorabilia. Roberts chose to go out of state because of her interest in fashion and her admiration for the university. “I really wanted somewhere that was picturesque, [some place] that fits with my vintage style,” Roberts said. “I wanted somewhere where I could walk down to mainstreet and have a bunch at a cafe. Or go shopping. I’ll be a fashion major, and I have my own fashion Instagram [account] and I could just see myself pursuing these interests in Fort Collins.”

Students gather around ping-pong tables ready for a table tennis game. One of the main goals of the club is to provide a fun environment for students to relax and unwind from a busy day. “Ping- Pong club is about students with a similar passion in ping pong coming together and improving each other,” senior member Jay Kannam said. “A usual meeting consists of putting tables together and playing, and sometimes we also hold tournaments to see who has improved over the week.”

Welding a chunk of metal, sophomore Mason Kasel works on a new project while wearing his safety gear for his
Agricultural Mechanics class. Safety is important in the workshop, and welders weld behind a shower curtain like a light shield. “The best part of my job is when you get a student whos been struggling and then they have an ‘ah-ha’ moment and have this look on their face and you can see the light bulb above the head,” Russell said. “There’s a lot of kids who’ve never had tools at home so this is a whole new experience for them.”

Juniors Abigail Martinez, Jack Polishook and Katie Whitmarsh report for a new episode of the Wolfcast. Being an anchor and seeing the show be produced everyday has taught me a lot, Martinez said. I enjoy being able to share the stories of CPHS to the community and representing the Wolfcast. It is important for my co-anchors and myself that we give the student body facts and unbiased opinions while also keeping the show entertaining.

Juniors Taylor Nguyen, Isabella Swift and Madelyn Roberts pose in front of their Fashion Design project for FCCLA Texas Region V competitions. The project, which involved creating a fictional fashion brand called Hollywood Vintage focusing on special occasion gowns inspired by vintage Hollywood fashion, won second place and allowed the team to advance to state. “It was fun brainstorming all of the ideas and crafting a legitimate project using your own creativity and designs, Nguyen said. We had to present in front of experienced evaluators while hitting certain Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, standards of fashion design, so while we felt like we did a decent job, we were not at all expecting second place.”

Singing on the PAC stage, junior Brady Allen performs the song ‘God, I Hate Shakespeare’ from Something Rotten. In addition to ‘Something Rotten’ the theatre program has put on ‘Carrie’, a haunted house and the ‘Cabaret’. “We’ve done a lot of preparing since the Summer, rehearsals have been going really well,” Allen said. “I go out with the main cast a lot to do more prepping or just to hang out and build chemistry. Mainly we’re just trying to have fun with it, not take it too seriously but still put on a good show.”

UIL Academics teams pose for a group photo four days after the Jan. 15 Burnet Invitational. Senior and captain of the UIL Journalism team Tristan Hernandez, who got first in editorial writing, third in headline writing and fourth in news and feature writing, said that the practice he’s acquired through invitationals and past UIL competitions has improved his writing almost as much as his time in journalism. “I decided to compete in UIL Journalism because I liked the format of the article prompts and wanted to improve further on my writing. While its possible in school, the timed format of UIL Journalism competitions makes you think quickly on your feet and really get your writing fundamentals down.”
