With busy schedules, it can be really difficult to find time and motivation to work out and keep a healthy lifestyle while keeping up with all school activities. This has motivated juniors Bella Rivera and Ashley Dahse to create the brand new club, “Health n’ Fitness” to promote healthy lifestyles around campus and connect with people on this same journey. “We created this club to help encourage people to get involved with healthy lifestyles as well as motivating ourselves too,” Dahse said. “This way we could continue our journey together with helping other like-minded people.”

This year, after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, South By Southwest was held from Mar. 11-20 and had venues spread around the city containing conferences, movie premieres, live music and many appearances from celebrities. “It was pretty cool,” junior Jack Polishook said. “I only did the free stuff because I didn’t have one of the passes but there was a lot of variety. There were cool art shows, there was a lot of cool music, there were a lot of people giving out free stuff, all of these companies giving out free things.”

I really gave it my all in class [for preparation]. It was really fun, Sosa said. I think it was really cool way to get kids hopes up to make sure they have a lot of confidence. It wasnt serious but a good mood booster for the day.

The Celebrities pose after finishing learning a very intense choreography. The Celebs learned a Hip Hop and contemporary routine while at their stay in Honolulu. “I really enjoyed that the teachers used their own style and let us make it our own, it was so much fun,” sophomore Brady Vacek said. “I really enjoyed the hip hop routine because it was kind of more down my alley, it was so fun and the vibe was great.”

Spanish students in Rhonda Bynells class are currently undergoing the letter exchanging process with the bilingual class of Noels Elementary. It has been an ongoing system, and both sets of students like the exchange. I hope whoever gets my letter likes what I wrote, Sandy said. Spanish is a fun class, and I hope that they can understand what I wrote.

Making finger foods, junior Sophie Dawson prepares a charcuterie board for her soirée table. All junior classes had to read The Great Gatsby in class and then held a 1920s themed party on March 23-24. “I thought the book itself was really eye-opening and entertaining,” Dawson said. “But the party was more enjoyable than the book, which makes sense, but I thought I would’ve enjoyed the book more. It was fun to act like I lived in the 1920s. I encourage next year’s juniors to not blow it off, because that’s lame and the party is really fun if you actually participate.”

On March 25, the team competed at the State competition at University of Texas at Arlington and placed seventh in their Improvisational Challenge. “Destination Imagination is a creative group meant for people who like to do creative things,” Danesh said. “I fully intend on doing this throughout my entire high school career. I really like the aspect that there aren’t necessarily logical boundaries to [improv], and I think that’s pretty cool. I think we all really truly enjoy doing this with people we are super close to and doing activities we love to do and things that genuinely interest us.”

The winner of the Library March Madness is Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Due to its popularity, the book was able to stay strong throughout the multiple rounds of the competition, according to Assistant Librarian Jennifer Baskin, who applauded the book for its years of success and relevance. “I pretty much knew that was going to be the winner from the get,” Baskin said. “I was kind of hoping that I would be surprised that [‘Hunger Games’] wasn’t the winner, but I understand why. It’s pretty popular, and a lot of people read that book, and it was their introduction to reading. That’s something that got them excited about reading, so it makes sense that they would still be excited about it. I think that book has held up, just sort of like ‘Harry Potter’, or ‘The Lightening Thief’. It holds up even when I read it as an adult, but I was still surprised that it was still going so strong.”

Let the Madness Begin

Geography Club members use geographical clues to figure out the mystery location in order to win another round of the online game, Geoguessr. The club, created by junior Ryan Green, meets every other Thursday to learn more about the environments around them in a more laid-back environment free of stress. “The initial goal [of the club] is to get more people excited about geography because I guess it’s kind of like a stigma that Americans are bad at geography, which is kind of true,” Green said. “I just wanted more people to get excited about geography and if it wasn’t laid back, then it wouldn’t be as exciting and not as many people would show up.”

As social medias influence grows, there are certain pros and cons that come along with it. In addition to liking Instagram posts or making music videos on TikTok, online relationships can form, people can educate themselves on important matters and both kids and adults gain exposure to the world around them. “Obviously, constant exposure to social media can be both physically and mentally draining,” senior Tolani Segun said. “However, if you are being conscious in its use, by limiting the time you spend on certain sites and refraining from pages that encourage negativity, then social media can be a very useful tool. Best of all, TikTok and Instagram let you play with funny filters, and TikTok even taught me how to dance.”
