Seniors struggle to find the will to make it through their last semester of their high school career. Almost done with all school work, the seniors show up for attendance purposes and to have their last experiences with their peers. “I’m doing the best I can in all aspects, trying to spend time with my family, friends, and make the most of this last year on campus, senior Brynne Wardell said. I think this is why seniors are always tired or never show up, we have so much to show up for.”

Taking a deep breath, senior swim captain Ashley Poulsen participates in the 100 meter butterfly event at the district meet on Jan. 17. Both the swim and dive teams ranked first in the district, and are moving onto regionals. “It is exciting knowing we won districts because we are one step closer to state,” Poulsen said. “We are anxious about how regionals will go because we have been very close in years past. Last year the boys team lost first place and got second by half a point, so it will be an exciting meet coming up.”

A few birds nests that Debby Barnes Crochet group had made. Barnes had started a crochet group in order to help the displaced wildlife in Australia. It just breaks my heart to see these poor, little animals [suffering] Barnes said. Some of them are being burned.  I saw a video last month on Facebook of this poor, little koala that was just crying because he was being burned.

Timberwolves for The Environment members work on their plastic bag projects on Sept.9. Each year the club adopts a wolfpack and funds their needs, with the money they raise. We get assigned a certain group of wolves and then if they need food, they take that money that we donated, or that different groups donated and then use that for them,” senior Brianna Wechsler said. “This year there was a flood in one of the areas, so the money that lots of people donated was used to fix their habitat.”

Anatomy and Physiology teacher, Nancy Matthias supervises a kidney dissection. Matthias believes that dissecting real organs and specimens enhances the learning abilities of the students. Live dissection gives [the students] an opportunity to actually feel the tissue, Matthias said. When the live specimen is 3D, they can see it, manipulate it, and [this makes it] a much better way to dissect and learn about the different organs and the body.

Senior Faith Elliott smiles along with three Rwandan children in the village of  Kageyo, Rwanda. Elliott volunteers with a group called Africa New Life in Rwanda and said that the trip impacts her every year. What surprises me the most about the people there is how the Rwandans can have so little and still be filled with joy. This year was different than the last because I already knew what to expect and saw a lot of old friends there, it was like I was going back home.”

Deciding what college one wants to attend can put a lot of pressure on students who may be struggling to keep up their grades and extracurriculars. Senior Marlee Randel said that she has been affected by this stress, having to maintain her school performance in addition to meeting the high costs that are sometimes required to apply.
“[Applying] has stressed me out immensely and it’s really hard to manage applications while staying on top of school and everything else,” Randel said.
