Holding up a visual representation of the solar system, Baylor Astronomy Professor and department head Dr. Barbara Endl, PHD. gives a presentation on the solar eclipse during DEN on March 22. Endl explained the proper safety precautions to take on April 8 when the solar eclipse passes through Williamson County. “Make sure you have the proper protection for the eyes,” Endl said. “In terms of other safety measures, if you are going to go somewhere, be prepared. For example, pack water and snacks. The travel on the way back can be very complicated because everybody goes at the same time, when the sun is out of the eclipse, everyone leaves at the same time, so there have been lots of traffic jams in the past.”

Walking through the tunnel created by the cheerleaders and Celebrities, senior Frances Tran smiles as the soccer team is sent off during DEN for their playoff game against Rouse tonight. Tran said the wins against Smithson Valley and Alamo Heights gave the team a morale boost to take on the Raiders tonight. “I know we were not 100% confident in those games,” Tran said. “But, Rouse is a big opponent for sure. We’re definitely going into tonight with a lot of morale [because of the previous wins].”

Issues are a thing, but we have them every single year and we dont let them get in the way. We work on a very, very tight schedule and theres no pushing deadlines back. It’s a lot of fun, though. Terry said his proudest moments are when his students are happy to see him. “When I take my wife to a football game or something and a bunch of students want to say hi to me or they like to smile and wave and it just makes me feel good that the students are really kind and supportive of me,” Terry said. “[I’m also] proud when I see students perform really well in their extracurriculars because I can see how hard they’re working in my classes, [so] when I see that they’re also working so hard in other things. Like they’re winning band competitions or they’re getting awards for their theater productions, or I see them put on their choir shows, that’s like, wow, you guys are incredible.”

Her purple planter built for her mom earned herself a blue ribbon. “I think it was really fun to learn how to paint,” Foster said. “We used spray paint primer and then two coats of paint and I thought that was really fun. We had to clean the entire thing. We had to wire wheel it and there was still splatter after and I spent like 3 hours cleaning. I had to put a hazmat suit on with a respirator. I absolutely loved it. I feel like Im in Monsters Inc right now. All the projects were all black and the only way you could see mine was because it was purple.”

Standing triumphantly with trophy in hand, the CPHS FTC Robotics team holds up their regional Motivate award. Although losing in regional semifinals, team 14361 will be moving on to compete in UIL State and FTC State. “It was the first time weve had two teams from Cedar Park make it to regionals,” Lovelace said. “Both teams made it to the playoffs which was really good. Last year we only had one team make it to regionals, so that was cool.”

Blair said that the Bible Study Club has benefitted her in many ways, and it can benefit other students as well by giving them a deeper understanding of the Bible. “This club increases the Christian community connection at our school, and provides students a place to ask questions about the Bible, pray for one another, and give each other strong, Christian-centered advice,” Blair said. “It truly makes me joyous to see the impact that this club has on some students, and encourages me to keep Christ at the forefront of my life.” Photo courtesy of Violet Harmon

Ismail was awarded Newcomer of the Year, which is given to a new varsity player across the district who is a standout. “In my first ever varsity game, I was nervous about a lot of things, the biggest was if I was going to be able to make shots in the game,” Ismail said. “I remember being nervous up until I made my first shot and then from there I felt really comfortable and confident out on the floor.”

DEN, a 35-minute-long free period students are given, is used in many ways for a variety of purposes. Students use this time to work on homework, make up missed tests and sometimes catch up with friends. Lots of students use DEN to run “errands,” as well, whether that means picking up an assignment from a teacher, visiting with a student teacher or asking the librarian about a tech issue. Students can no longer leave their designated classroom during DEN, even to go to the restroom.

During DEN on Sept. 20, students who were already 18, or who will be turning 18 soon, filled out Voter Registration forms. Rho Kappa president and senior Ariana Balakrishnan helped oversee the voter registration event. “I think it’s really important for high schoolers, or anyone eligible to vote, to get started doing that process at a young age because it’s a part of our civic duties and you might as well start young, Balakrishnan said. It’s a right that everyone should be able to exercise and I’m really glad that Rho Kappa could bring this experience to the school.

This year’s annual tradition was held on Aug. 22 in the Milburn park parking lot and came with complications and confusion that led to obstacles the Student Council had to overcome. “Planning events this year, I would say that it was stressful at first just coming in off of summer and not having done anything and then full on sprinting into the first events,” senior Ainsley Harlan said. “But I think we’ve gotten the hang of it. We’ve kind of gotten our feet under us and we have our group chat, it’s gotten a lot easier to communicate. It can be stressful at times, but I think more importantly it’s fun, I know that some of the people I’m planning it with, like Ariana [Balakrishnan], we have a lot of fun doing it and we enjoy what we’re doing. On Sept. 8, senior Kate Pape was given was recognized by the mayor of Cedar Park, Jim Penniman-Morin, for being the first female in the Cedar Park and Northshore district to earn the Eagle Scout rank. The mayor gave a speech at the Cedar Park City Hall and signed the award acknowledging the work she put in to achieve this goal in only three years, which is rarely done. “Scouts has made me more confident and comfortable when I’m in groups,” Pape said. “I am also more comfortable in taking the lead in the things that I do. The main reason the event was planned was to strengthen their bond as a group, according to Riordan. “Pitch Black is always a very tightly knit community, so there’s always a lot of close bonding and friendships,” Riordan said. “I think this year, that’s especially true with the new members coming in. They’re all close with each other and so now we’ve grown closer with them as a whole. Speech and debate teacher Bianca Rocha works in her classroom. According to Rocha, her challenge as the new speech and debate teacher and as the new debate team coach is to uphold the standards and success that debate teams in previous years had seen. “[The challenge is] upholding what the previous teachers have done and maintaining that structure, [and] making sure that all students still have all of the opportunities for success. It’s using the inspiration of what they left behind, but building on that for this new year and hoping that the students can grow [and] learn those new opportunities [so that] new students come join the team and they can see all the trophies that they’ve won.”
