Singing on the PAC stage, junior Brady Allen performs the song ‘God, I Hate Shakespeare’ from Something Rotten. In addition to ‘Something Rotten’ the theatre program has put on ‘Carrie’, a haunted house and the ‘Cabaret’. “We’ve done a lot of preparing since the Summer, rehearsals have been going really well,” Allen said. “I go out with the main cast a lot to do more prepping or just to hang out and build chemistry. Mainly we’re just trying to have fun with it, not take it too seriously but still put on a good show.”

Unyielding to the opposing team, junior shooting and point guard Gisella Maul dribbles down the court. On Nov. 30, the varsity girls won their non-conference, home game against Waco University 59-29, adding to their overall 17-0 ranking but not contributing to district. “I feel like we’ve had a pretty tough schedule and they are all really good teams that we’ve played,” Maul said. “If anything the focus is more real [this year]. We still have something to prove and so we’ve been more focused and more determined because we know that we’re not just satisfied with winning one state championship, we have bigger goals in mind.”

Hoopfest, a fundraiser held for girls basketball on Oct. 23, consisted of open practices, a free throw competition and barbecue plates. At the Honda Stage, my friends and I saw Surfaces and Polo G perform. This stage is one of the larger stages, and I was up near the barricade so I felt all the vibrations through my body. I definitely got dehydrated, but they passed out boxed water to the crowd, which helped me not feel like I was about to pass out.

Cheering alongside the other student section leaders, senior Emily Rangel tries to keep energy high while watching the football games. The next home football game will be on Oct. 15, at the Gupton stadium. “I wanted to become student section leader because I felt like I would be able to help bring everyone together and be as enthusiastic as possible after COVID made last year really rough, Rangel said. I wanted to make sure I had some sort of leadership position in order to be able to make my senior year and everyone else’s year memorable. My best advice to the underclassmen is to not be afraid to be loud and partake in anything they can. It’s not embarrassing to have school spirit and it makes the pep rally much more enjoyable if everyone participates.”

Discussing strategies with senior varsity football player Dylan Hufford, varsity football coach Brendan McCarthy coaches the team against Georgetown game on Sept. 24. McCarthy, who used to coach at Cedar Park Middle School, started coaching football at the high school level as of this year, and he said there is a difference between the two school football teams. “I am becoming a better coach because I can concentrate on one position: safeties,” McCarthy said. “Here, football is a lot more fast paced and having to win is a lot more important. There is a lot more pressure because of the level of play.”
