Composer, freshman Katie James, said that she plans to release her first album in 2019. “It’s a great creative outlet and music has always been such a big part of my life,” James said. “I also feel like when I get my first album out soon, I’ll be proving something to my younger self, whose dream was to release original music.”

Inspired by local artists and bands such as Carson Mchone and Beat Root Revival, freshman Katie Smith plays piano, ukulele and writes original music and plans to release her first album in late summer of 2019.

“I started doing it about two years ago as a way to express [my] emotions,” Smith said. “It’s a great creative outlet and music has always been such a big part of my life. I also feel like when I get my first album out soon, I’ll be proving something to my younger self, whose dream was to release original music.”

Hoping to go to college to study film, more specifically editing and audio, Smith still keeps her options open for a future in music.

“Although it is mostly a hobby, I am planning to release a few albums, and I guess only time will tell where life takes me,” Smith said. “I could see myself writing music for future projects also.”

Smith said that she is able to find inspiration anywhere. She can find most of it in her life experiences she also finds it in unexpected places like the school hallway.

“I honestly just write all the time,” Smith said. “If I have a random idea for a line in a song, I take out my phone and write it down. I never know when I’ll see something that will inspire a metaphor or topic.”
