It’s a new record! The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has hit over one billion views across all platforms, making it the most-watched trailer in history. With these record-charting views comes many fans inspecting every frame to find even a hint of what may occur in the movie coming out July 31. Fans are speculating about possible plot lines in connection with the Spider-Man comics and are waiting patiently for potentially another trailer to be released later in April.
It’s time to face it: Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is the best Spider-Man out of the three live-action versions. After watching the trailer and seeing Jon Bernthal return as Frank Castle (The Punisher) and Mark Ruffalo back as Bruce Banner (Hulk), I can already tell this movie is going to be phenomenal. In the trailer, we see Spider-Man get run over by Frank Castle and yell at Frank, calling him by his first name. There is quite a time jump between “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, around a four-year-long jump to a college graduate Peter Parker. Peter calling The Punisher by Frank sets the premise for Peter Parker making a name for himself on the New York streets as a street-level hero and over the four years, potentially creating relationships with other street-level characters like The Punisher, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, the Hell’s Kitchen defenders.
Everyone’s favorite Marvel relationship–Peter Parker and Michelle Jones–is still unfortunately broken up, but in MJ’s defense, she has no idea he exists…maybe. Many speculations across the internet noticed the possible character Paul snuggling up to MJ at a party. Paul is a controversial comic character, the son of supervillain Emissary, who marries MJ and has a family with her in an alternate reality and creates a split in Peter and MJ’s relationship. However, that’s not what interested me about the party scenes added into the trailer. I was too focused on the background of MJ and Ned’s new apartment and all the Spider-Man images on a wall, in a very investigative style. It’s created a whole new idea that while MJ and Ned forgot who Peter was because of Dr. Strange’s spell during “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, they didn’t forget that they were friends with Spider-Man and at one point knew who was under the mask, that they were best friends and had loved each other. It’s leading me to believe that MJ and Ned are trying to figure out who Spider-Man is, which leads to another theory that Ned grew up all alone. Ned had no friends throughout his childhood and high school career without Peter and he might feel betrayed by Spider-Man for never coming back and revealing his identity to Ned. The fan theory casts Ned as bitter toward Spider-Man, potentially leading to Ned becoming the Hobgoblin, another Spider-Man villain in the movie, alongside Scorpion, The Hand, Tarantula, Boomerang and Tombstone, reported to be some of the main villains.
On the topic of Marvel Villains, we see Spider-Man receive a key to the city of New York. One little thing, though: it’s not Kingpin presenting him the key. The Mayor of the city notoriously presents keys to the city and this little scene gives a window into season two of “Daredevil: Born Again”. Daredevil’s ongoing fight with Kingpin may end in a victory for Matt Murdock if Kingpin doesn’t stay the Mayor through the next season of Born Again before Spider-Man. The Hand makes a comeback from a couple of the “Defenders” TV shows and we can see Spider-Man jumping into a fight with a couple of the ninjas from “The Hand”. The resemblance of this scene to the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” trailer scene of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man fighting all the villains in the final fight scene of that movie by himself can’t go unnoticed. Mainly because the NWH trailer scene was heavily edited to not show the two other Spider-Men fighting alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Fans suspect that Marvel similarly edited the trailer scene for BND by potentially removing Hulk, Daredevil, or The Punisher below him, also fighting The Hand. This trailer seems to do a lot of editing with a scene where he catapults off a roof with his webs, but then cuts to a scene that looks like he is being aggressively thrown through a water tank. I’ve been loving the theory that Hulk is the one to throw him, but there’s not been much fan theory on this specific cut scene, so it will be a mystery for now.
By far the biggest fan theory is Spider-Man getting organic webbing similar to Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man. Currently, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man gets his webs from a small device on his wrist, coined WebShooters; however, Peter Parker is seen talking to Bruce Banner about changing DNA and Peter Parker is shown disoriented and confused in parts of the trailer. We see Peter Parker freaking out, then falling down a building with no suit and no web shooters. Miraculously, the next scene shows him saving himself from falling with webs, but those webs couldn’t have been from WebShooters and he looks really confused as he looks up at his arm, conveniently out of frame, probably showing organic webbing. This has Spider-Man fans going crazy with theories–could he become the Man-Spider: a horrible creature Peter Parker becomes as he transforms into a grotesque half-man, half-spider? Personally, I hope it’s not Man-Spider because that would need a lot of CGI, something Marvel hasn’t been having the best time making look good… She-Hulk, I’m looking at you… yikes. However, Man-Spider is a fan favorite idea. Other speculation includes the venom from the scorpion altering his DNA. Another theory that rivals the popularity of Man-Spider is “The Other”. This theory includes a comic storyline where Peter Parker becomes severely ill from an incurable biological decay disease and later dies at the hands of Morlun. When Peter dies, he reaches a spiritual state where he meets a cosmic spider-deity known as The Other, which gives him the option to reject the spider and die as a man or embrace the spider in him and evolve into something more than human. Peter Parker chooses to live and is reborn in a cocoon with new spider abilities. I find this theory to be the most interesting because I would love to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man officially become the strongest live-action Spider-Man and gain cool new abilities to explore that could later possibly help in Doomsday or Secret Wars. However, there is a scene in the trailer showing Peter Parker’s black eyes while fighting The Hand. Maybe he’s transforming into Man-Spider and will grow four more arms, which will help him fight against The Hand, or maybe it’s Venom taking over with the leftover symbiote from the end-credits scene of “No Way Home”. His black eyes look very similar to Eddie Brock’s eyes when Venom would talk to Eddie or when Venom would transform in place of Eddie.
The most significant question of all… who is Sadie Sink playing in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”? Could it be Jean Grey? That’s a very favored fan theory, but I’d say probably not. I mainly see this theory as problematic because with “Doomsday” coming out this year, it wouldn’t make sense to add Jean Grey to the MCU a couple of months before the X-Men are added to the MCU. In “Avengers: Doomsday”, we’ll officially be seeing Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Cyclops, Mystique and Nightcrawler, who all know and have had their own interactions with their universe’s Jean Grey. Why would Marvel add another Jean Grey right before introducing the concept of the X-Men’s Jean Grey? It just doesn’t make sense, which is why I’m in favor of the theory that she could be Gwen Stacey/Spider-Woman. The MCU has already added the idea of multiple Peter Parker/Spider-Man variants across timelines. I think they will stick with that idea in this movie and introduce a female Spider-Woman to continue the growing idea of variants and infinite universes to connect to Doomsday’s collision of universes. But I’m not completely opposed to the possibility of Jean Grey, because we do see some potential mind manipulation scenes where guards seem to be controlled in a couple of trailer scenes, which could be from Jean Grey’s ability to control minds.
As long as the movie continues Spider-Man’s story and is entertaining, I don’t care whether he is Man-Spider or Venom or if Sadie Sink is Jean Grey or Gwen Stacy. It’s all the same to me. Do I have preferences? Of course I do– everyone does–but Spider-Man has so many great comic storylines and I’d be happy with any of the ones I mentioned. I’m ready for the next trailer so I can see even more fan theories and speculation because it’s one of the most entertaining things to watch. Just know, you will see me in the movie theater on July 31 with some popcorn and soda, reclined in my chair, waiting for the movie to start.
