A Game Most Dangerous

On March 20, the theatre program performed their UIL One Act play Frankenstein. “I could barely believe what I heard after [it was] announced that we were advancing,” freshman Zack Williams said. “It was crazy. Being one of the only freshmen in the show and also [being] a lead definitely put pressure on my shoulders. I knew that the only thing I could do was my best, but that was until I started to think what if my best was not enough? I was feeling like I could never amount to being what [everyone else] thought I was. Holding up a visual representation of the solar system, Baylor Astronomy Professor and department head Dr. Barbara Endl, PHD. gives a presentation on the solar eclipse during DEN on March 22. Endl explained the proper safety precautions to take on April 8 when the solar eclipse passes through Williamson County. “Make sure you have the proper protection for the eyes,” Endl said. “In terms of other safety measures, if you are going to go somewhere, be prepared. For example, pack water and snacks. The travel on the way back can be very complicated because everybody goes at the same time, when the sun is out of the eclipse, everyone leaves at the same time, so there have been lots of traffic jams in the past.”

She is going to attend Austin Community College to pursue her passion for fashion design and hopes to design costumes for future color guards, or work in fashion marketing. “I think it’s [been] one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had,” Perrone said. “It’s an experience that everyone should have, that family that you build and the community that you have. Hands high in the air and cheering in front of the PAC, Varsity Winter Guard gives one last goodbye before they headed off to the Reid Arena in College Station where they would end up placing fourth at their state competition. Sophomore Tiffany Ly says state was an experience she’ll never forget. “I know that our team has put so much hard work into everything and its just genuinely so cool to see the show put together,” Ly said. “But our staff and our chaperons really help put the show together as well, helping lift us up, bring stuff that we need and support from the band is also really great.”

A Scary Good Play

Yearbooks have been on sale for $80 all school year, with 90 left in stock. “Im really happy with this book,” content editor and senior James Sanderson said. “I think other people are going to be happy with it; all our pages look really cute. Issues are a thing, but we have them every single year and we dont let them get in the way. We work on a very, very tight schedule and theres no pushing deadlines back. It’s a lot of fun, though. Senior Ash Foster poses next to her project she built for to attend the San Antonio Ag Mech show. Her purple planter built for her mom earned herself a blue ribbon. “I think it was really fun to learn how to paint,” Foster said. “We used spray paint primer and then two coats of paint and I thought that was really fun. We had to clean the entire thing. We had to wire wheel it and there was still splatter after and I spent like 3 hours cleaning. I had to put a hazmat suit on with a respirator. I absolutely loved it. I feel like Im in Monsters Inc right now. All the projects were all black and the only way you could see mine was because it was purple.”

Senior Avery Allmer decides to leave her track and basketball journey in high school and attend the University of Texas at Austin next year. “Being a college athlete is something that not a lot of people get to do so it was definitely hard for me to make the decision that I don’t want to run anymore, but thinking about the school that I’m going to, also not a lot of people get to go there,” Allmer said. “It kind of made my decision easier because I am super grateful to get to go to UT. I’m giving up track, but I’m still gaining a good education, so it wasn’t like I was giving something up completely.”

Standing on the cusp of new beginnings, senior Natalie Murray left her mark through designs for organizations around the school and color guard performances. Having played since she was 5 years old, she is dedicated to softball and has committed to UTPB for softball. “When I got my offer it took me a very long time to decide where,” Robinson said. “Softball has always been my dream for college, and UTPB is my fit. When [I committed] I knew I was going to be loved and supported.”

Ismail was awarded Newcomer of the Year, which is given to a new varsity player across the district who is a standout. “In my first ever varsity game, I was nervous about a lot of things, the biggest was if I was going to be able to make shots in the game,” Ismail said. “I remember being nervous up until I made my first shot and then from there I felt really comfortable and confident out on the floor.”

Walking through the tunnel created by the cheerleaders and Celebrities, senior Frances Tran smiles as the soccer team is sent off during DEN for their playoff game against Rouse tonight. Tran said the wins against Smithson Valley and Alamo Heights gave the team a morale boost to take on the Raiders tonight. “I know we were not 100% confident in those games,” Tran said. “But, Rouse is a big opponent for sure. We’re definitely going into tonight with a lot of morale [because of the previous wins].”

Smiling at the camera with paddles in hand, my siblings and I pose for a picture at the end of the school’s pickleball club. Pickleball is a wonderful sport simply because it is just fun. It is so satisfying to hit a ball right where you intended it to go, to work with your teammate to win against your opponent and to master a skill you’ve worked so hard to perfect. I know that if you give pickleball a shot, you can experience these things too, and you’ll soon find yourself obsessed.

Prom was on April 6, 2024 at the Bob Bullock Museum and lasted from 7-11 p.m. Tickets were $60 per person and promised a DJ, photo booths, games, drinks and light snacks. Students voted on a theme of Casino Royale, but the only on-theme aspects were the poker chips. Prom was okay, but definitely needs to be revamped for next year.

On the Sunday after we arrive, we always take family pictures on the beach—no amount of complaining about the temperature of the sand or the angle of the sun in our eyes will convince our mom that these pictures are unnecessary. Generally, the beach is associated with warmth and sun, but Thanksgiving week can get cold and even rainy making for some long family picture sessions. But with all the practice we’ve gotten over the years, I am happy to say that I am a pro at taking jumping pictures, getting my jeans only half full of sand, and timing everything just right to get the beautiful sunset in the background. Despite all the hours we spend posing on the beach, I always really like the pictures in the end as well as the time that we get to spend together as a family. Photo courtesy of Rachelle Wilkinson
