On March 20, the theatre program performed their UIL One Act play Frankenstein. “I could barely believe what I heard after [it was] announced that we were advancing,” freshman Zack Williams said. “It was crazy. Being one of the only freshmen in the show and also [being] a lead definitely put pressure on my shoulders. I knew that the only thing I could do was my best, but that was until I started to think what if my best was not enough? I was feeling like I could never amount to being what [everyone else] thought I was. Holding up a visual representation of the solar system, Baylor Astronomy Professor and department head Dr. Barbara Endl, PHD. gives a presentation on the solar eclipse during DEN on March 22. Endl explained the proper safety precautions to take on April 8 when the solar eclipse passes through Williamson County. “Make sure you have the proper protection for the eyes,” Endl said. “In terms of other safety measures, if you are going to go somewhere, be prepared. For example, pack water and snacks. The travel on the way back can be very complicated because everybody goes at the same time, when the sun is out of the eclipse, everyone leaves at the same time, so there have been lots of traffic jams in the past.”

Walking through the tunnel created by the cheerleaders and Celebrities, senior Frances Tran smiles as the soccer team is sent off during DEN for their playoff game against Rouse tonight. Tran said the wins against Smithson Valley and Alamo Heights gave the team a morale boost to take on the Raiders tonight. “I know we were not 100% confident in those games,” Tran said. “But, Rouse is a big opponent for sure. We’re definitely going into tonight with a lot of morale [because of the previous wins].”

Senior Avery Allmer decides to leave her track and basketball journey in high school and attend the University of Texas at Austin next year. “Being a college athlete is something that not a lot of people get to do so it was definitely hard for me to make the decision that I don’t want to run anymore, but thinking about the school that I’m going to, also not a lot of people get to go there,” Allmer said. “It kind of made my decision easier because I am super grateful to get to go to UT. I’m giving up track, but I’m still gaining a good education, so it wasn’t like I was giving something up completely.”

Standing on the cusp of new beginnings, senior Natalie Murray left her mark through designs for organizations around the school and color guard performances. Tissue paper, toilet paper, whatever it was. But it was less of a job and more just having fun with everyone.”

A Scary Good Play

Posing with their “Featured Yearbook” banner, signifying that the 2022-2023 yearbook is used as an example for other yearbook classes, the yearbook team smiles at the camera. Yearbooks have been on sale for $80 all school year, with 90 left in stock. “Im really happy with this book,” content editor and senior James Sanderson said. “I think other people are going to be happy with it; all our pages look really cute. Issues are a thing, but we have them every single year and we dont let them get in the way. We work on a very, very tight schedule and theres no pushing deadlines back. It’s a lot of fun, though. Senior Ash Foster poses next to her project she built for to attend the San Antonio Ag Mech show. Her purple planter built for her mom earned herself a blue ribbon. “I think it was really fun to learn how to paint,” Foster said. “We used spray paint primer and then two coats of paint and I thought that was really fun. We had to clean the entire thing. We had to wire wheel it and there was still splatter after and I spent like 3 hours cleaning. I had to put a hazmat suit on with a respirator. I absolutely loved it. I feel like Im in Monsters Inc right now. All the projects were all black and the only way you could see mine was because it was purple.”

Tossing a water polo ball into the air, senior August Pritzlaff poses for a photo. This year, Pritzlaff was able to accomplish his goal of becoming captain of the water polo team and helping his team in a new way. “Beyond swimming, I became captain of the water polo team, something I always wanted to do in high school: becoming captain of the water polo team and helping the team grow and continue forward,” Pritzlaff said. “It was really a dream come true for me, and I would say something I’m very proud of.”

This year, the show choir participated in the Capital City Showcase where they sang and danced to “Crocodile Rock” and “Don’t Stop Me Now.” “My favorite memory in show choir is the showcase,” freshman Eshita Agrawal said. “We were the first to perform, and we got the chance to watch all the other amazing contestants. [We] were amazed. It was an amazing experience, I think we bonded very well.”

Having played since she was 5 years old, she is dedicated to softball and has committed to UTPB for softball. “When I got my offer it took me a very long time to decide where,” Robinson said. “Softball has always been my dream for college, and UTPB is my fit. When [I committed] I knew I was going to be loved and supported.”

Ismail was awarded Newcomer of the Year, which is given to a new varsity player across the district who is a standout. “In my first ever varsity game, I was nervous about a lot of things, the biggest was if I was going to be able to make shots in the game,” Ismail said. “I remember being nervous up until I made my first shot and then from there I felt really comfortable and confident out on the floor.”

Smiling at the camera with paddles in hand, my siblings and I pose for a picture at the end of the school’s pickleball club. Pickleball is a wonderful sport simply because it is just fun. It is so satisfying to hit a ball right where you intended it to go, to work with your teammate to win against your opponent and to master a skill you’ve worked so hard to perfect. I know that if you give pickleball a shot, you can experience these things too, and you’ll soon find yourself obsessed.

Prom was on April 6, 2024 at the Bob Bullock Museum and lasted from 7-11 p.m. Tickets were $60 per person and promised a DJ, photo booths, games, drinks and light snacks. Students voted on a theme of Casino Royale, but the only on-theme aspects were the poker chips. Prom was okay, but definitely needs to be revamped for next year.

Sophomore Emma Weltens browses her BeReal feed during lunch. Weltens said that she appreciates how BeReal focuses on its users posting in-the-moment photos. “I think it’s a good app, it’s less about seeing them with their friends as it is about what they’re doing in their life,” Weltens said. “If you’re not doing anything [and post on BeReal], people reach out like ‘hey, wanna hang out?’ That doesn’t really happen on Instagram.”
