The week of Oct. 7-11 is custodian appreciation week. Leander ISD sets aside this week to appreciate custodians in our district. Spanish teacher Rhonda Bynell said custodians do a really wonderful job, and she is grateful for the work they put in every day.
The Meaning in Cleaning

Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer mental health support system focused on suicide prevention. Lead Counselor Sarah Cable volunteered Cedar Park High School to be the first campus in the district to implement the program into the school. “In my previous campus, I had three suicides,” Cable said. “It’s really, really hard. Hard to go through those things. Having the three losses of students on campus was so tragic and detrimental to everyone that knew them and was around them and their families and friends. If we can prevent the loss of a life and be proactive, I think we should try anything that we can. [By trying Hope Squad] we’re not just trying something willy-nilly; we’re trying something that schools have been using for a while and has seen success with.”

With their T-Wolves held high, the varsity volleyball team huddles together in preparation at a match in early September. The team is 6-0 in match play and will start the second round of district play next week. “The second time isn’t going to be easy,” Head Coach Lori McLaughlin said. “That's the thing about this district. The coaches are so good and very skilled with what they do and every team is usually different the second time that we play. We just want to hope that we add some more finesse to our game, and then lead us into the postseason, which hopefully [has us] peaking at the right time.”

Last night, the O-Line position group was interviewed during Timberwolf Night in America, a weekly broadcast that features different aspects of the team and is hosted by Josh Willard and Brad Cone. “Timberwolf Night in America is an opportunity for us to learn about who the players are, because the team changes every year,” Willard said. “It's a chance to ask what they are looking to accomplish this week. We’ll go over the last game, preview this week's matchup, and talk about the record book. It's just fun talking about Timberwolf football.”

"It's also something that teaches you how to look at the world in different ways, and it teaches you how to think critically. It's more than just learning about facts and dates and stuff like that. It's about learning how life works around you, and when we come at history that way, and we invite kids to engage in that discussion in that thought process, and to see how even though this happened 100 and some years ago, it's still relevant."

“AITA for having a little snack? I (15M) ate my cousin (13M)...” Content farms are more common than you think, and have been around for a long time. However, this is a new age of content farming that is targeted for teens and young adults, rather than children. But what qualifies as a content farm? Content farms have garnered several stereotypes that can be used to identify one, being that they use automated tools, produce large amounts of low quality content and still gather a large audience.

HOSA is a hands-on clinical experience that allows students to get a feel for what they want to do in the future. “We really have​​ a genuine passion for advocating for mental issues,” Nguyen said. “And we feel like it is an underserved topic that no one really addresses or doesn’t address deeply enough with school, regarding adolescents. It’s usually to get your sleep, eat, drink water.”

The team placed seventh at global finals in Kansas City, Missouri in May. “This is the second time I’ve gone to global finals, and it’s always such a great experience,” sophomore Aryana Jahadi said. “I’m really happy and super privileged to have been able to experience it twice now. Being able to do better than last time and get seventh was an amazing feeling.”

Hands high in the air and cheering in front of the PAC, Varsity Winter Guard gives one last goodbye before they headed off to the Reid Arena in College Station where they would end up placing fourth at their state competition. Sophomore Tiffany Ly says state was an experience she’ll never forget. “I know that our team has put so much hard work into everything and it's just genuinely so cool to see the show put together,” Ly said. “But our staff and our chaperons really help put the show together as well, helping lift us up, bring stuff that we need and support from the band is also really great.”

On March 20, the theatre program performed their UIL One Act play "Frankenstein". “I could barely believe what I heard after [it was] announced that we were advancing,” freshman Zack Williams said. “It was crazy. Being one of the only freshmen in the show and also [being] a lead definitely put pressure on my shoulders. I knew that the only thing I could do was my best, but that was until I started to think what if my best was not enough? I was feeling like I could never amount to being what [everyone else] thought I was. Yearbooks have been on sale for $80 all school year, with 90 left in stock. “I'm really happy with this book,” content editor and senior James Sanderson said. “I think other people are going to be happy with it; all our pages look really cute. Issues are a thing, but we have them every single year and we don't let them get in the way. We work on a very, very tight schedule and there's no pushing deadlines back. It’s a lot of fun, though. During the summer, Peterson traveled to Colombia to help build an elementary school that only had two classrooms but five or six grades with one teacher. “We add[ed] two more classrooms,” Peterson said. “It’s kind of hard when you have two or three grades in one classroom and you only have one teacher. It’s very hard to actually get some beneficial learning. During this varsity event, players and their dads get together to put new decals on their helmets. This year, in addition to being announced QB 1, David was also voted as one of six captains on the varsity team, a role that he had difficulty adjusting to as a younger player on varsity. “It was a struggle for me, being younger than everyone else and being a leader,” David said. “I wondered if [the team] would respect me, or if they would just see me as a younger person from a younger class. They played against Liberty Hill on Tuesday night and won with a final score of 10- 5. “We improved a lot even from the last game,” senior Blake Hillis said. “We lost against them the last time we played [Liberty Hill], but it was really close. It was just really important for us to win this match since it was the district finals. [When we won I felt] overwhelmingly happy, especially being there with my teammates and it being my senior year. It was just really great. It [felt] like a community.”

It is so satisfying to hit a ball right where you intended it to go, to work with your teammate to win against your opponent and to master a skill you’ve worked so hard to perfect. I know that if you give pickleball a shot, you can experience these things too, and you’ll soon find yourself obsessed.
