See how CPHS is preparing for the upcoming elections through promoting civic involvement.
In case you missed the Rho Kappa voter registration drive, you can still register by mail by printing out a registration form, filling it out and mailing it to your local election office. Registering in person is also an option, but the deadline to register is Oct. 7. Early voting begins Oct. 21 and ends Nov. 1. The official election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5. Smiling with junior Michael Moracci (left), junior Ben Gilsbach (right) was a volunteer at the Rho Kappa voter registration drive. The volunteers helped check for whether students were already registered, and would guide them to either become registered or help them vote depending on that. “I think that student voter registration is really important,” Gilsbach said. “Every citizen of the US should be able to vote, especially our generation, since as we come of age our opinions will be the ones to shape our own future. The voter registration drive went really well, we had a great turnout of students. I think that giving students the opportunity to register to vote in school really helps to encourage them to go through the process and engage in voting, as they don’t have to go out of their way to register.” Photo by Jane YermakovRegistering to vote, senior Brooklyn Collinsworth is seen smiling as she does so. Students are able to register at 17 and ten months, earlier than the commonly believed 18 years old age requirement. “It was a good experience and was made very simple by the Rho Kappa volunteers,” Collinsworth said. “It didn’t take more than ten minutes. It’s really important for younger people to vote because if we are not heard, we have the power to make change and should take up the opportunity.” Photo by Jane YermakovHanding out registration sheets, senior Savanna Williamson is seen helping out at the Rho Kappa voter registration drive. The drive occurred Sept. 17 during DEN and lunch. “I loved being able to help people get registered to vote,” Williamson said. “Everyone seemed super excited and happy and I’m so glad to hear that they want to have a voice in politics. I feel like these events get students way more involved in electoral processes because many students might not go out of their way to register to vote or don’t realize that they can register a bit before they turn 18, therefore this helps them get involved when they may have previously thought they couldn’t.” Photo by Jane YermakovWith his National Voter Registration Day sticker on display, senior Austin Maciborski smiles after finishing his voter registration. Rho Kappa hosts the voter registration drive every year to encourage students to vote. “I decided it was going to be a good idea [to register] because I really wanted to vote and I think it’s important,” Maciborski said. “My experience at the drive was really nice, everyone was cordial and friendly. It was very simple and easy, I just filled out my paperwork and got everything signed. I’m excited to vote because there’s a lot that you can vote for that’s not just presidential. It’s very important and it does affect you.” Photo by Jane Yermakov (Jane Yermakov)
