Senior Austin Cernosek has won for the third time in the UIL band competition and will be going to State to compete. The road to State is a long process with different levels, each with their own competition.
Cernosek competes as a percussionist. Step one is the Local District level, where he competed against all other percussionists in the region. The top six are selected to move on to Area, then the top four go to state.
State participants become a part of an elite group of musicians. Cernosek was able to play with the top 28 percussionists in the country.
“The environment is amazing,” Cernosek said. “You play with the best of the best.”
Though he has been three times, Cernosek still considers this a huge honor and practices every day.
“I have to practice a lot,” Cernosek said. “In order to win, I have to learn new music every week.”
With dedication and passion under his belt, Cernosek looks forward to playing in the elite concert at State.
“It’s nice that my hard work pays off,” Cernosek said.
