When sophomore grader Zoey Bivins stepped into the Galveston Island Convention Center on March 8, she wasn’t there for a vacation or a quick getaway. She was there to speak up—for herself, her peers and students across Texas.
Bivins was one of nine student representatives at a statewide convention designed to amplify student voices. Held at The San Luis Resort in Galveston, the event brought together students from 16 different school districts to discuss real issues affecting their campuses, and propose real solutions.
“The purpose of the convention was for students to get a chance to voice their opinions about our schools,” Bivins said.
And voice them they did.
One of the biggest issues discussed: school bathrooms.
“They’re considered hangout spots for a lot of students,” Bivins explained. “So there’s automatically a roadblock for students who actually want to use the bathroom, but are being crowded by others.”
Her panel, made up of fellow student leaders, addressed how these everyday problems affect the school environment and student well-being.
The day wasn’t just about challenges; it was also about innovation and inspiration. Attendees experienced six student-inspired demonstrations that showcased creative solutions to campus problems. Four scholarship recipients took the stage to share their stories and remind everyone of the power of perseverance and the value of student-led change.
Bivins also had a rare opportunity to connect one-on-one with Dr. Bruce Gearing, need to say that he is the Leander ISD Superintendent.
“It was great to sit down with him and share ideas,” she said.
Looking ahead, Bivins is already thinking about the future. And with the momentum built this year, it’s clear students like her will continue to lead the way.
“We know what’s really happening in our schools,” Bivins said. “It only makes sense that we’re part of the conversation to fix it.”
