Christmas movies are a staple during the winter season. Get comfortable with some snacks and hot cocoa while it’s cold outside, and turn on a movie to get in the Christmas mood. Although it may not be cold in Texas right now — it’s not even December — that doesn’t stop movies from being just as fun and giving you some Christmas spirit.
‘Red One’ is a new action comedy movie starring Chris Evans and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. It came out Nov. 15, and while watching it, I could already tell this movie would be a good watch.
The visual elements of this film were remarkably excellent, especially because I was going into the movie thinking there would be fake-looking characters, keeping in mind all the mythological creatures they had to CGI. There were a couple of moments that could have been a little better given what the other graphics looked like, but generally speaking, none of it stopped me from finding the setting so incredibly detailed that it made me want to live in that city.
Unsurprisingly, the action scenes were fun and entertained me the whole time, but I expected no less from the ex-Captain America and The Rock.Generally, the plot was somewhat basic, Santa was kidnapped and they’ve got to save him before Christmas is ruined. The Rock plays Santa’s bodyguard, Callum Drift, who teams up with the hacker and bounty hunter, Jack O’Malley. There were plot points that got a bit confusing as different Christmas lore kept coming up, like Krampus and a whole mythological oversight agency. However, the world building and character-building are what immersed me in the movie. For the most part, it was entertaining, and after a while, I didn’t have a problem keeping up.
The jokes landed almost every time, with some even getting me to laugh out loud in the theater. The humor and quips strike a perfect balance for both adults and children, making it acceptable and enjoyable for a wide range of audiences. While there are a few mild bad words here and there, they never felt excessive or out of place, just enough to add a little more of an attitude to the character’s jokes without going too far. The humor felt natural, and the funny subplots weren’t overbearing.
The acting in Red One was pretty solid overall. The cast had good chemistry, and everyone played their role with just the right amount of charm and sincerity. No one was trying too hard, which made the performances feel natural and easy to watch. It’s the kind of movie that feels like it could become a once-a-year Christmas rewatch. Lighthearted enough to enjoy every time, but with enough action and fighting scenes to keep it from feeling like a typical holiday flick.
