With their T-Wolves held high, the varsity volleyball team huddles together in preparation at a match in early September. The team is 6-0 in match play and will start the second round of district play next week. “The second time isn’t going to be easy,” Head Coach Lori McLaughlin said. “That's the thing about this district. The coaches are so good and very skilled with what they do and every team is usually different the second time that we play. We just want to hope that we add some more finesse to our game, and then lead us into the postseason, which hopefully [has us] peaking at the right time.”

Last night, the O-Line position group was interviewed during Timberwolf Night in America, a weekly broadcast that features different aspects of the team and is hosted by Josh Willard and Brad Cone. “Timberwolf Night in America is an opportunity for us to learn about who the players are, because the team changes every year,” Willard said. “It's a chance to ask what they are looking to accomplish this week. We’ll go over the last game, preview this week's matchup, and talk about the record book. It's just fun talking about Timberwolf football.”

The Halftime Show That Almost Wasn’t

During passing period, parking lot security Alan Gallagher stands on the street between the portables and the main building, ensuring students get to the other side safely. Everyday, Gallagher monitors the parking lots, checks parking permits and helps guide traffic, even more so now with the addition of the portables. “I spend a lot of time making sure students and staff get across the walkway,” Gallagher said. “I haven’t had any real problems [with students] yet, it’s just about getting people adjusted to the new traffic patterns.”

The new interactive panels come with many features including the ability to annotate directly on the board.“I do love the that I can display certain spanish vocabulary or spanish conjugation [on the panels],” advanced spanish II and III teacher Sofia Pickle said. “I can go and write underneath it or take notes directly on those words or the worksheet I have displayed. I really enjoy that the panels are accessible and have features that are fun for students.”

They played against Liberty Hill on Tuesday night and won with a final score of 10- 5. “We improved a lot even from the last game,” senior Blake Hillis said. “We lost against them the last time we played [Liberty Hill], but it was really close. It was just really important for us to win this match since it was the district finals. [When we won I felt] overwhelmingly happy, especially being there with my teammates and it being my senior year. It was just really great. It [felt] like a community.”

HOSA is a hands-on clinical experience that allows students to get a feel for what they want to do in the future. “We really have​​ a genuine passion for advocating for mental issues,” Nguyen said. “And we feel like it is an underserved topic that no one really addresses or doesn’t address deeply enough with school, regarding adolescents. It’s usually to get your sleep, eat, drink water.”

The team placed seventh at global finals in Kansas City, Missouri in May. “This is the second time I’ve gone to global finals, and it’s always such a great experience,” sophomore Aryana Jahadi said. “I’m really happy and super privileged to have been able to experience it twice now. Being able to do better than last time and get seventh was an amazing feeling.”

Hands high in the air and cheering in front of the PAC, Varsity Winter Guard gives one last goodbye before they headed off to the Reid Arena in College Station where they would end up placing fourth at their state competition. Sophomore Tiffany Ly says state was an experience she’ll never forget. “I know that our team has put so much hard work into everything and it's just genuinely so cool to see the show put together,” Ly said. “But our staff and our chaperons really help put the show together as well, helping lift us up, bring stuff that we need and support from the band is also really great.”

On March 20, the theatre program performed their UIL One Act play "Frankenstein". “I could barely believe what I heard after [it was] announced that we were advancing,” freshman Zack Williams said. “It was crazy. Being one of the only freshmen in the show and also [being] a lead definitely put pressure on my shoulders. I knew that the only thing I could do was my best, but that was until I started to think what if my best was not enough? I was feeling like I could never amount to being what [everyone else] thought I was. Yearbooks have been on sale for $80 all school year, with 90 left in stock. “I'm really happy with this book,” content editor and senior James Sanderson said. “I think other people are going to be happy with it; all our pages look really cute. Issues are a thing, but we have them every single year and we don't let them get in the way. We work on a very, very tight schedule and there's no pushing deadlines back. It’s a lot of fun, though. Turning off her dreaded morning alarm for school, sophomore Cassie Rico wishes she got some more sleep last night before beginning classes. Rico said she realized it's always better to go to school with more sleep so she doesn't struggle throughout the day. “I wake up at 6 a.m. and go to sleep around maybe 11 p.m. or 12 a.m. depending on how much homework I have,” Rico said. “ I have noticed the less sleep I get, the more my grades go down because my focus suffers from lack of sleep.”

Displaying her mortar and pestle with a freshly ground Tylenol pill, senior Kim Dao smiles with her four other classmates after listening to Pharmacy Technician teacher Tyler Terry inform them on how to prepare medicine. In addition to these materials, Pharm Tech students also learn to use to needles, syringes and molds to practice their skills. “We have only five girls in the class, so you’re more engaged in the class, and you get so close to everyone,” Dao said. “Even though we didn’t really know each other in the beginning, we’re a lot closer now and we like to joke around.”

During the summer, Peterson traveled to Colombia to help build an elementary school that only had two classrooms but five or six grades with one teacher. “We add[ed] two more classrooms,” Peterson said. “It’s kind of hard when you have two or three grades in one classroom and you only have one teacher. It’s very hard to actually get some beneficial learning. During this varsity event, players and their dads get together to put new decals on their helmets. This year, in addition to being announced QB 1, David was also voted as one of six captains on the varsity team, a role that he had difficulty adjusting to as a younger player on varsity. “It was a struggle for me, being younger than everyone else and being a leader,” David said. “I wondered if [the team] would respect me, or if they would just see me as a younger person from a younger class. Desai will be attending Brown University in the fall to pursue an education in medicine. “The feeling of finishing a race is so rewarding,” Desai said. “Being involved in a variety of extracurriculars has taught me how to balance my time and be well rounded. It is so satisfying to hit a ball right where you intended it to go, to work with your teammate to win against your opponent and to master a skill you’ve worked so hard to perfect. I know that if you give pickleball a shot, you can experience these things too, and you’ll soon find yourself obsessed.

Prom was on April 6, 2024 at the Bob Bullock Museum and lasted from 7-11 p.m. Tickets were $60 per person and promised a DJ, photo booths, games, drinks and light snacks. Students voted on a theme of Casino Royale, but the only on-theme aspects were the poker chips. Prom was okay, but definitely needs to be revamped for next year.
