Antisemitism is one of the leading causes towards the Holocaust, and affects the lives of millions to this day. “I still care so much about education and I was aware of the Texas Holocaust Genocide and Antisemitary Advisory Commission through a friend, and thought that that really kind of related really well to me, as someone who cares about the rights of others and cares about education,” Fryer said.

After placing second in their respective LDEs at the Capital District contest in early November, freshman Jesus Jaramillo-Gallegos and freshman Wyatt Pickett will compete at the Area XII LDE contest in Georgetown on Nov. 23. Jaramillo-Gallegos is competing in Greenhand Spanish Creed Speaking, while Pickett’s LDE is Greenhand Creed Speaking. “Honestly, [I’m excited for] just traveling around, maybe meeting more people,” Jaramillo-Gallegos said. “And [I’m] nervous about probably just not being able to define my weak areas. I feel like I did decent for my first time ever doing this. I just think it’s fun.”

Standing in front of a small audience, senior Kimberley Walters shares a social criticism poem titled “Pity the Nation” by Lawrence Felinghetti. Every month, sponsored by the poetry club, the library hosts a poetry reading. “I never thought I would be interested in [poetry readings] because I’m not the biggest poetry fan,” Walters said. “I think poetry is a very succinct way to express feelings and get a story across. Whereas lots of books have a span of a whole story, but it’s put in a lot of words. The power of poetry is that you can be so succinct within, and there’s a lot of power within the words that are used.”

Because he is a recipient of this scholarship, he will join the marines. “It means a lot [to receive this scholarship,” Rechtfertig said. “It’s very calming because a lot of the colleges I applied for are out of state which is expensive and this scholarship pays it off. DECA

            DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is a club that helps students who want to go into marketing and business. Mrs. Stapleton, the teacher in charge of the DECA group at our school, gives her students a lot of opportunities to get involved in community service.

            “We have a charity run in the spring that the students are putting together, and we are also co-hosting Trunk or Treat on Oct. 28,” Stapleton said.

            The DECA club also does competitions, including role plays, were they have to come up with solutions to given problems related to the topic they selected. The other part of the competition is to write papers that give an idea of a business plan or a campaign.

Deca meets at 8:00 a.m. the first and third Thursday of the month in room B101.

Sophomore Lizzy Lamm has always been interested in writing. She started writing creative stories in sixth grade, and created the middle school newspaper in eighth grade for her girl scout silver award project. She continued her love of writing into high school, and this is her second year on the Wolfpack newspaper staff. This year, she is also vice president of the new creative writing club, and secretary of the CPHS book club.
