A woodworking vendor shows off his creations at the annual Project Graduation Holiday Bazaar on Dec. 10. “We’ve been doing this since 2012, and so some of the vendors have actually reached out to us,” Project Graduation president Paula Hufford said. “A lot of them have been here year after year, [but] some of them are new. Some of them are [current] students or previous students, so theyre familiar with the event, and now they’ve started their own little businesses.”

Seniors Thomas Chavez and Connor Ross plan to finish their project soon to be put up before they leave for their senior year. “I think it would be a good experience to get to see how to make things,” Chavez said. “So maybe down the road I can make something similar.”

Whereas classical art depicts a scene and tells a story, often of mythology or religious references, artists of modern times focus more on expressing ideas and feelings. The style of back then has since been replaced by splashes of color, curvy lines and other new art techniques. [Over time] I think art has shifted more to emotion rather than human beauty, sophomore Braeden Murray said. Modern art is significantly more abstract and doesnt have an obvious theme in mind. Very simple shapes, no people to be seen, and more colorful. I think in the older [time period] the art was definitely more human based, with biblical [references] while modern art is more emotion based because its not depicting a particular scene or action thats happening.”

It teaches you a lot of good stuff on how to be a better human, and you can definitely learn a lot rather than just how to pin someone. Arguing with one another during the climax of the play, seniors Claire Poulter and Bryelle Swift perform in the public performance of “The Children’s Hour.” With some students acting together since middle school, the 2023 UIL One-Act Play Competition will be the last outing for some of the thespian seniors. It feels completely surreal that this is my last show,” Poulter said. Theater has been such a huge part of my life, this will be show number 22 in the past seven years, and leaving it all behind is super hard. Alumnus Jorge Chong poses in front of the Orion spacecraft used in NASAs Artemis I mission, the first phase in the Artemis programs plan to land the first astronauts on the moon in over 50 years. Chong is one of the engineers responsible for the next groundbreaking lunar mission. “I began becoming very interested in aerospace in high school and started becoming passionate about it then,” Chong said. “I honestly thought I would work in the aeronautics sector, working with aircraft and airplanes. I didnt anticipate working with spacecraft or working in the space world at all. The game of Senior Assassin began on March 1 and will be played by 176 seniors across campus. “I was so tired,” Ridder said. “I was kind of just surprised at first because I live pretty far, so I didn’t expect anyone to be out there. I mean, it was interesting, I was just super tired, so it surprised me a little bit. But I’m still going to help out my team and everything. So far it seems pretty cool, the water guns are the best option.”

From Computer Science to Social Studies, Literary Criticism to Journalism and Current Events, there’s something for everyone. “Of course, the competitions have a lot of weight attached to them,” senior and captain of the UIL Current Events team Kaci Craddock said. “But I try to remind myself that at the end of the day, its a fun extracurricular activity. I think it’s very challenging, but also extremely rewarding.”

State level competition eight times, top three finishes seven of those eight times in four different sports, two state championships back to back and one undefeated season last year. Spanish Teacher Rebecca Zabel-Brewer made many achievements during her time as a coach and felt she had made it far enough in her career to stop and focus on her family. “I chose to stop coaching because I have two sons who are athletes,” Brewer said. “I realized that coaching and following their athletic careers were opposing goals. There was no longer room in my life for both of those things, I was going to have to choose one or the other. It was an easy choice. I love my sons and I want the front row seat to bear witness to their athletic careers.”

Leaping into the air, bending towards the water to complete his dive, sophomore Rustin Wilkinson competes in the first dive competition of the season, Mavwood invitational. Wilkinson has been diving for a year and a half and is seeded second for districts. “Diving is hard because it requires you to know where you are in the air,” Rustin said. “You have to know which rotation you are in when you are spinning. [I dive] because I want to get in the top ten at state. Last year [at state] I got second to last, but this year I want to get in the top ten so I can see all my hard work and perseverance pay off.”

“Avatar: The Way of Water” was released on Dec. 16 2022. Directed by James Cameron, the “Avatar” sequel features an updated cast. The production and animation was fantastic, however the three and a half hour length made it a bit difficult to watch fully through in the movie theatre. One of the few stick vehicles in the school parking lot, senior Alex Trebilco’s 1970 Ford Maverick is a restoration project he worked on with his dad. He and his father have worked on cars together for all of Trebilco’s life, and have several finished projects because of it. “[My favorite memory with my car is] honestly just cruising with my dad in his truck and my car,” Trebilco said. “Both of the [cars] are restored. He did the truck and we did the Maverick, so it’s cool to roll down in two cars that we made run together.”

With pompoms in hand, sophomore Phoebe Solberg dances to Underneath the Tree in the Luminaries performance during the Holiday Show. The show was held on Dec. 2 in the PAC after a years hiatus due to COVID-19. My favorite part of the holiday show was getting to spend time with my friends and getting to see everyone else perform as well, Solberg said. I love being on Luminaries because I get to spend a lot of quality time with my friends and grow as a dancer.

Coming off a tough non-district schedule and loss to Round Rock, varsity football won its first district game of the season against Georgetown 49-45. The game came down to the final minute, with the T-Wolves’ play cementing their lead. “Winning our first district game definitely helped us because we had just beat one of our toughest district opponents in a big way,” junior linebacker Isaac Barksdale said. “The mood was almost frustrated because it was that close of a game. But, it was also like ‘Okay, we know what we have to do, so let’s go do it.’

Anna said that the best part of the snow days was how pretty it was. “I loved going outside and taking pictures,” Anna said. “The worst part was not being able to drive anywhere. I had gotten my license the day before the snow and I had to wait a week before I could actually go anywhere because of the ice roads.”
