The girls’ varsity cross country team came ready to race at the Friday Night Lights meet Friday, August 30 at Bear Branch Fields in The Woodlands, TX. They placed third in the Varsity A group coming of a second place win at state.
Co-captain senior Gabrielle Ford is pleased with the results from the meet.
“We did really well,” Ford said. “We learned a few things we need to work on, but I was proud of the effort everyone put in.”
This season is especially interesting and challenging, according to junior Laurel Brown.
“This year’s team is a lot younger than last year’s,” Brown said. “We still have upperclassmen but we have to depend a lot more on the younger team members than we did last year since there are only eight of us and we need seven girls to field a varsity team.”
It is too soon to say whether the younger dynamic will help or hurt the girls’ team
Will a six-day training schedule every week pay off at the state meet?
Their captain certainly thinks so.
“If all of us can get a little faster we have a really good chance of medaling again,” Ford said.
