Run for the Funds
Juniors Organize a Fun Run to Support Local PE Programs
May 18, 2018
Staying active has been a part of juniors Leah Wilcox and Jennifer Han’s lives since they were little. This year, the girls joined to encourage a healthy lifestyle for others. Wilcox and Han organized the “Beat the Heat Fun Run” which will happen on Saturday, May 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adults and older kids can participate in a 2-mile run and for the younger ones, a 1K.
All of the proceeds from the race will be donated to the LISD elementary school PE programs.
“As I was once an elementary school student who had looked forward to PE class every day, the lack of funds to buy new equipment devastates me,” Han said. “I hope that through the fun run, in which we are donating all proceeds to the PE programs of the elementary schools in the Cedar Park area, we will bring awareness to this problem.”
Wilcox and Han said that they put a lot of time and effort into organizing the race. They talked to many teachers such as Adam Babich, the bookkeeper Steffany Jackson, as well as Curt Randa from the City Council.
“A huge part of the race is our vendors and sponsors,” Han said. “We gathered these through various calls, emails, in-store visits and legal paperwork.”
The girls said that although parts of the race were difficult to put together, they are excited for everything to come together.
“We’ve been working on little parts of the run throughout the past few months and seeing the community actually out there and running to support the elementary school PE programs is something we have aspired to do from the very beginning,” Wilcox said. “We hope to see everyone out there and running.”
